Healthy soil is the key to successful, resilient, and profitable farming. At SAFI, we see that many farmers use fertilizers and soil improvements without knowing what their soil needs. This often yields higher costs and soil that becomes less productive over time.

Healthy soil is the key to successful, resilient, and profitable farming. At SAFI, we see that many farmers use fertilizers and soil improvements without knowing what their soil needs. This often yields higher costs and soil that becomes less productive over time.
Through our Soil Health Management activities, SAFI helps farmers make better decisions by promoting affordable, science-based soil analysis and offering customized soil fertility plans. Our trained team tests five key soil health indicators in the field using Makerere University Soil Testing Kits, namely: Soil pH, Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K), and Organic Matter (OM)
The results show farmers exactly how healthy their soil is. This information forms the basis for practical, site-specific advice that boosts productivity while protecting natural resources.

Our Soil Health Management activities provide a full range of services, including:
  • Taking soil samples from the field and carrying out quick soil testing.
  • Explaining soil test results in clear, simple language that farmers can easily understand.
  • Creating customized plans to correct and improve soil fertility.
  • Guidance on how to apply balanced fertilizers and manage nutrients effectively.
  • Suggestions for building up soil organic matter through composting, mulching, growing cover crops, and other sustainable methods.
  • We offer ongoing technical support to help farmers put these recommendations into action.

Our Approach

We work closely with individual farmers, farmer groups, and cooperatives to make soil testing services easy to access and use. We combine scientific analysis with hands-on training, making sure farmers understand and apply our recommendations to see real improvements in their farm productivity. Our team works with farming communities to show sustainable methods of soil management so that healthy soils can be maintained for future generations. We hope to see farming communities where every production decision is based on understanding the soil. By encouraging regular soil testing and sustainable soil management, SAFI is helping to build more productive farms, healthier ecosystems, and stronger rural livelihoods in Uganda.
