Urban Yields Gardening for Household Nutrition and Income in Kasese Town

The project aims to enhance household diets and introduce alternative income-generating opportunities for urban families. As urbanization increases and farmland availability declines, access to fresh, nutritious, and affordable food becomes increasingly challenging.

We are implementing the Urban Kitchen Gardening for Household Nutrition and Income project in Kasese Town. The project aims to enhance household diets and introduce alternative income-generating opportunities for urban families. As urbanization increases and farmland availability declines, access to fresh, nutritious, and affordable food becomes increasingly challenging. The project demonstrates that limited urban spaces can be transformed into productive gardens using sustainable agricultural practices.

The project promotes climate-smart urban agriculture by helping families and schools establish kitchen gardens in available spaces, including backyards, raised beds, and containers. Participants receive training in practical skills such as vegetable cultivation, soil improvement, compost production, and environmentally sustainable farming techniques. These competencies enable households to produce nutritious food throughout the year and reduce expenditures on vegetables.

This season marks the project’s initial implementation in Kasese Town. To date, SAFI has facilitated the establishment of 15 kitchen gardens across various neighborhoods, providing practical demonstrations for household food production. Additionally, 5 gardens have been established at five primary schools, supplying fresh vegetables for school meals and offering students experiential learning opportunities in agriculture, environmental stewardship, and nutrition.

In addition to improving food accessibility, the project encourages families to generate supplementary income by selling surplus vegetables, thereby contributing to local food security. SAFI continues to provide technical assistance, services, and community engagement activities to foster self-reliance, promote healthy lifestyles, and advance sustainable urban agriculture. Through the transformation of limited urban spaces into productive gardens, households and schools in Kasese Town benefit from improved nutrition, increased income, and enhanced environmental sustainability.
